Advisory: Substance Use Disorder Treatment for People with Co-Occurring Disorders (based on TIP 42)

This updated (March 2020) TIP is intended to provide addiction counselors and other providers, supervisors, and administrators with the latest science in the screening, assessment, diagnosis, and management of co-occurring disorders (CODs).

This Advisory is based on TIP 37, Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With HIV/AIDS. It highlights strategies and considerations for substance use disorder (SUD) treatment providers to effectively engage people with HIV in SUD treatment.

This Advisory is based on TIP 53, Addressing Viral Hepatitis in People with Substance Use Disorders. It offers guidance to providers and administrators in substance use disorder treatment programs on screening for, and treating clients with, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C infections.

This Advisory highlights how mental and substance use disorder treatment programs can better serve people with physical and cognitive disabilities and substance use disorders (SUDs) and/or serious mental illness (SMI).

This guide supports health care providers, systems, and communities to address first-episode psychosis and co-occurring substance use disorders. It describes relevant research, examines emerging and best practices, identifies knowledge gaps and implementation challenges, and offers resources.

This guide reviews interventions on treating substance misuse and substance use disorders (SUD) in youth with serious emotional disturbances (SED), distills the research into recommendations for practice, and provides examples of the ways that these recommendations can be implemented.
